high tech cad-cam system

What is Cerec?

Cerec is a widely used high tech cad-cam system that was first created in 1980 at the University of Zurich. The team at the Gentle Dental Centre has been using this technology since 2008 to produce high quality restorations/crowns in a single visit.  Worldwide there are approximately 7 million Cerec restorations produced each year.

How Does it Work?

The tooth is prepared for a crown or inlay/onlay by removing all of the old filling material and any decay present. Any weak tooth parts are also removed.

It is then 3D scanned with the latest intra-oral camera creating a virtual digital impression.

The restoration is proposed by the computer and designed by the dentist using CAD (computer aided design).

Once your restoration is designed on the CEREC computer, a solid block of porcelain ceramic is placed in the CEREC milling unit. Special tools then sculpt your restoration to the finest detail based on the CEREC design.

The restoration is then fitted on your prepared tooth and may be bonded then and there, depending on what material is used. If your restoration requires extra strength e-max material, it will be placed in a furnace where the ceramic is crystallized before it is bonded.

During the appointment patients will have two 20 to 25 minute breaks while the restoration is being milled and crystallized.

Is Cerec suitable for all cases?

When a material other than ceramic, such as gold or zirconia is required, then the case must be sent to a laboratory.

In highly aesthetically demanding cases Cerec may not be the ideal option.

Crowns

What Is An E-max Crown?

The E-Max crown is a type of all-ceramic crown that is preferred for its longer lasting, aesthetic qualities. It is an appealing translucent colour which is combined with extra strength and durability.

The E-Max crown is made from a single block of lithium disilicate ceramic. This is a top grade material, harvested for its toughness, durability and opaque qualities, making it a highly prized crown.

The E-Max crown is considered to be the best match with your own natural teeth. The transparent colour and life-like shape ensures that it is highly unlikely to be noticed amongst your own natural teeth.

There is also no metal alloy base with this crown, which means no unsightly looking grey line around the gum line. They are strong, long lasting and very unlikely to crack or fracture.

The Gentle Dental Centre team has been providing cad/cam crowns for 12 years and has had tremendous success with Cerec technology, resulting in thousands of satisfied patients.
