The Process

Step #1 Initial Consultation

At your first visit our Wellington orthodontist team will listen to your concerns about your teeth and get an understanding of what you are hoping to achieve.

We’ll take you through a thorough examination to determine the nature of your orthodontic problem and discuss whether braces are the best option for you.

After the examination your orthodontist will recommend a range of braces that can be used to help correct the problem. Options may include traditional braces, clear braces or Invisalign.

As each type of braces works differently, we will break down the process, braces prices and how long each treatment is expected to take. We encourage you to ask as many questions as you need.

No referral is necessary to book your initial consultation.

Step #2 Orthodontic Records and Treatment Plan

Once you’ve decided to proceed with your chosen orthodontic treatment, we will book you in for a second appointment to take pre-treatment diagnostic records.

Before our orthodontists can fit braces to your teeth, we need to take records of your teeth. At this appointment 3D digital scans, photographs and X-rays will be taken of your teeth. These procedures are painless and will be used for diagnosis and treatment planning.

In more complex cases a subsequent consultation may need to be arranged to discuss the findings of these records, present a more detailed treatment plan and outline the financial aspects of the proposed treatment.

Step #3 Get Your Braces On

Getting teeth braces is a gentle and painless process. For teeth straightening procedures using traditional or clear braces your orthodontist will glue small metal brackets onto the front of each tooth. A wire is then placed across the brackets and gently tightened to straighten the teeth. This process typically takes 40 to 60 minutes.

The majority of patients experience slight pressure or discomfort for two or three days after their braces are first fitted.

It is likely your teeth will feel a little tender during this time, and we recommend eating softer foods.

Types of Braces

Traditional Braces - Stainless Steel

Most people think of stainless-steel dental braces when they think of getting their teeth straightened. At Gentle Braces, we use premium 3MTM mini-twin brackets that are typically smaller than most bracket systems. These tiny brackets are placed on the teeth and a series of wires are used to gently move teeth into place.

Metal braces can be made more fun by applying coloured modules around each bracket. These are a fun way for kids or teens to personalise their braces.

If you are concerned about the cost of braces in New Zealand, stainless steel braces are a great cost-effective option. They are the most common type of braces used and are suitable for treating most orthodontic conditions.

Clear Braces - Ceramic Brackets

Clear braces are made of ceramic and give the wearer a near-invisible way of straightening their teeth. Clear braces are a great option for adults or people who are concerned about the appearance of traditional teeth braces.

We use 3M clarity brackets that blend with the colour of your teeth and are designed to resist staining and discolouration throughout treatment.

Hidden - Lingual Braces

If you have concerns about getting braces as an adult, invisible or lingual braces are a much more discreet option. Lingual braces are placed behind your teeth and completely hidden. With lingual braces, no one will know you’re getting your teeth straightened.

One of the best aspects of invisible braces is no matter how complex your bite or crowding is, these braces are able to do exactly what visible braces can do.

Incognito braces are 100% customised with robotically bent wires, which means they are absolutely unique to every individual when they are fitted. If you are wondering how much braces cost in New Zealand, book in for an initial consultation.

Clear Aligners - Invisalign

Invisalign uses a series of clear aligners that are custom-fitted and robotically made to fit your teeth perfectly. These virtually invisible aligners gently straighten teeth into a smile you’ll be proud of.

Invisalign is comfortable, can be removed to eat and is easy to clean. Invisalign can be used to treat most cases of teeth misalignment. However, complex bites may require traditional braces to be used in conjunction with Invisalign to get the ideal outcome.

Invisalign aligners are completely transparent which makes them especially popular among adults who would like a discreet treatment option.

At our practice, we use state-of-the-art 3D digital scanning technology to fit your Invisalign braces. There are no more messy impressions required for the aligners to be made. This scan is then sent to the USA before the aligners are custom-made and shipped back to us. The specialist orthodontist oversees all aspects of treatment with Invisalign.

We have a number of specialist orthodontists at Gentle Dental. Invisalign prices differ from patient to patient. Book an initial consultation to help us give you an accurate price for Invisalign treatment.

Early Treatment with Plates

Most orthodontic treatments can take place once a patient’s adult teeth have come through; however, there are certain circumstances where early treatment is required. Early treatment usually involves widening the top or lower jaw, and correcting crossbites or narrow arches.

Before treatment of a younger patient, we first need to determine that there is a long-term benefit for early intervention. Early intervention can help prevent the need for orthodontic treatment later in life and reduce the need to remove teeth when the patient is older.

Early treatment may involve removable plates, plates that are glued in, anti-thumb sucking appliances, or the use of partial braces to align the front teeth. Our specialist orthodontists will advise you if early treatment is required. As the cost of braces and early intervention plates differs from patient to patient, we recommend booking an initial consultation for an accurate cost assessment.

Braces Tips

How to Look After Your Braces

Brushing your teeth is just as important, if not more, when you are wearing dental braces. Food can easily get stuck between the brackets and arch wires and lead to tooth decay or gingivitis.

Learning to care for your braces properly helps to reduce the amount of plaque that can build up on your teeth. Watch the video below for our top tips for looking after your teeth when you have braces.

Braces Tips

Foods to Avoid

There are some foods you should avoid when you are wearing any type of teeth straightening device. While you can eat most foods, hard, sticky, or crunchy foods should be avoided. These foods can stick to the brackets of your braces and pull them off your teeth. Some soft foods can also get stuck between the brackets easily. When these foods break down, they produce acids that bind to tooth enamel and cause it to deteriorate. Foods which should be avoided include:

  • Minties and toffee
  • Sticky caramels
  • Lollies
  • Licorice
  • Popcorn
  • Peanuts
  • Ice
  • Corn chips
  • French bread sticks, bread crusts or hard rolls
  • Whole apples or carrots (cut them into pieces first)
  • Corn on the cob (cut the corn off the cob before eating)

FAQs

The main advantage of getting braces is having straight teeth for the rest of your life. Straight teeth are advantageous for many reasons, including better oral health and a more confident smile. Having straight teeth can improve your self-esteem and give you the confidence to smile in photos more. Braces also help to align your teeth which can enhance the shape of your face and are easier to keep clean than crooked or misaligned teeth. An aligned bite can also make chewing more comfortable and fix some speech impediments.

Teeth straightening is common in New Zealand. The best age to get braces is usually between the ages of nine and fourteen. At this age range, all of your adult teeth have come in and your physical development is most receptive as your bones are still growing. In particular, the jawbone is still growing and isn’t fully formed yet. This makes it easier for braces to move the teeth into place. Another reason to get braces as a young adult is that it’s a common age to wear them. Many people get braces during their teenage years and the time will go very fast. Before you know it, you’ll be an adult with straight teeth and a beaming smile.

Adults can get braces. However, if you have the option of getting braces as a teenager you should. While there is nothing wrong with getting braces as an adult, some adults don’t like the look of traditional braces. The process of getting braces is also slightly longer for adults. This is because your bones have stopped growing and it can take longer to move the teeth into place. If you don’t like the thought of having visible braces, Invisalign or clear braces make great alternatives for adults. If you are interested in how much braces cost, book a consultation with our orthodontist today.

Orthodontics can make brushing more difficult but it’s vital that you take care of your teeth when you have braces. Brush carefully between the brackets and wires with a good toothbrush twice a day. Electric toothbrushes with rounded heads are a great option for cleaning between brackets. If you don’t have an electric toothbrush, choose a regular brush with flexible bristles and a narrow neck. This will help to dislodge food from between the wires and infiltrate any small, hard-to-reach spots around your teeth. Choose a brush with soft bristles so that you’re not damaging any of the hardware on your teeth.
